One of my favorite quotes comes from the movie Kelly's Heroes, in which "Big Joe" asks "Oddball" why he is drinking wine and eating cheese instead of assisting with the repair of a disabled tank. Oddball replies, "I only ride 'em, I don't know what makes 'em work." Similarly, most people cannot describe the inner workings of their computer and are at a loss as to how to repair them. I think this demonstrates the maturity of computers as a tool.
Defeating the Social Engineers with Technology
The other day I received a call from a social engineer. She was quite pleasant as she attempted to gather information from me. Her starting set of knowledge was my business name, address, and phone number. This information is readily found in commercially available databases or for free on this web site. She also knew the name of my phone carrier. That is also easily discovered through any of the search engines. So armed with all of this, she started her pitch.

One of the side effects of continually increasing your computer storage space is that you can end up with a pile of spare hard drives. If you don’t have another computer to put them into, Thermaltake offers an interesting solution, the BlacX Duet storage controller, at a suggested retail price of $69.99.
The BlacX Duet allows you to drop one or two hard drives into the controller. When attached to a computer, each drive appears as an additional local drive. You can easily remove either of the drives and insert another drive from your collection of spares.
